Our Perception of Time
A poem of thoughts, a rambling of thinking & a post link to inspire your writing
It seemed fitting to write a short interlude before I introduce you to this poem. I wrote this several months ago and posted here on this very site. I wanted to rummage around in what time meant and means to each and every one of us. The precious nature of how we spend it and the value that we each place in how we choose and organise our time.
Afforded the same hours as another and yet our paths can be very different, our time on this earth not promised, our experiences varied, our tragedies individual, our pain held within ourselves, our feelings overlooked and sometimes shared, our situations sometimes empathised & sometimes misunderstood by others, our situations similar but not always the same, our challenges and solutions open to interpretation and our inspiration channelled by our beliefs and thoughts along with the wide ranging impact of external influences.
But if all we have is time, what would you say?
This is what I said:
If all we have is time, like the time with my son in the car on the way to college,
If all we have is time, like the time with my daughter when I take her gymnastics,
If all we have is time, like when I sit in front of the TV with my husband and we laugh at one another’s jokes,
Then that is when I want time to matter.
If all we have is time, like when I sit down to write to massage creativity,
If all we have is time, like when I map out my days and clients work,
If all we have is time, like when I take a break and walk in the fresh air with our hairy diva chihuahua,
Then that is when I want time to matter.
If all we have is time, then I want that time to be well served,
If all we have is time, then I want to be free from its chains and to make time for self-care,
If all we have is time, then I want to be a wise keeper and to make the best use of it,
Then that is also when I want time to matter.
If all we have is time then I want the time to check in, to make conversations and to ensure people are okay,
If all we have is time then I want to give people the space to talk,
If all we have is time then I want to be able to share the journey,
Then that is also when I want time to matter.
If all we have is time, then we understand that our time is finite even if time still ticks long after we’re gone,
If all we have is time, then we understand that making the most of it with our loved ones, friends, colleagues, clients and businesses amongst our daily lives is important,
If all we have is time, then it’s those precious moments that mean the most,
If all we have is time, then today matters and how we choose to use it.
Time is scheduled,
Time is broken down,
Time is taken up,
Time is booked in,
Time is opportunity,
Time is learning,
Time is healing,
Time is growing,
If all we have is time, then today matters and how we choose to use it.
Time is for you,
Time is for me,
And time is what time means to each and everyone of us.
How do you feel about time & what does this poem make you feel and how does it change or make you perceive your time, if at all?

Oh my gosh, you wrote this and I have been thinking about time a lot! I’m in the middle of reading Jenny Odell’s book called Saving Time. It explores our society’s view on time, how cultures see it, and how history’s view of time has changed. It’s a good read, full of different perspectives on how we see time. It opened my brain up to all different possibilities around the value of our time.
Great article, made me think of series Dark that deals with time, and Dali’s “time” paintings
