The Money Making PR Move By Mars
The not so celebratory demise of Bounty that's got us all talking and why I plan to build up my chocolate stockpiles..
It’s certainly been a PR corker of a clever marketing stunt for Mars after the controversial news of Bounty being dropped and most definitely worthy as a topical subject for my Tuesday Tell All Tales after an alleged 39% of people surveyed said they’d wanted them gone from Celebration selection tubs which has prompted an outcry from chocolate coconut lovers.
Those firmly sitting in the loving camp have called for Milky Way to be removed according to Twisted Food and Good Morning Britain have been debating the merit of having them taken away from select boxes, but don’t lose faith, as it’s a trial, and limited tubs will still include Mars, Snickers, Milky Way, Galaxy and Maltesers so it’s not all bad and is after all very much a first world problem that could only result in it being continually discussed in our part of the global sphere.
Said for the more mature pallet I have to admit at 41 I would be devastated to see them disappear as they are my personal favourites (send any wasted Bounty bars and sweets to me Mars) and I believe add a certain amount of je ne sais quoi quality to our festive selection boxes. There’s still a chance after the trial that they could be reinstated and with all the media hype around this experiment I say to buy them in bulk and savour their tasty delights whilst you can (just in case the Bounty chocolate eviction is forever).
That being said, I always wonder about the data and how true the stats are and it’s worth bearing in mind that around 2000 people were a part of this survey aged between 18-65 and there are over 60 million people within the United Kingdom, so, it’s worth noting that this is only a small proportion of individuals and so perhaps not as accurate as we’re led to believe ( I wonder if we should demand a recount?).
If you’re a Bounty fan and not willing to give up the fight get down to your local corner shop and supermarket and buy en masse. After all, we can really show Mars who’s boss by putting more profit into their deep pockets.
I have to say touché Mars Wrigley, you have outdone yourself on this one and the hot topic of Christmas this year and the question that now remains is which chocolate will be left last in the box if it’s not Bounty?
What’s your favourite chocolate in the Celebration box and what would you walk over hot coals for to see continued forever more?
(Yes, this might be slightly tongue in cheek this week (or a lot) as I am amused but also slightly tense at the prospect of the tasty morsel that is Bounty disappearing from sight and saddened to think it could be thrown into the depths of the unwanted chocolate pile never to be seen again.)
If in doubt of the chocolate chat you only have to type in, ‘the decision to cut Bounty bars from Celebration boxes,’ as I did on my friend Google the search engine, to discover the reams of news articles talking about the volcanic gossip of the moment, and so I say, Vive la Chocolate Révolution — rise up and save Bounty my comrades because at select Christmas Market Sites with Tesco’s this year customers will be able to exchange tubs bought for a, ‘no Bounty’ option up until the 18th December.
I know what I’ll be doing this festive season and it won’t simply include watching movies with family and enjoying reams of chocolate — what about you?
